Practice Makes Perfect…Well, Not Exactly.

Practice Makes Perfect
Practicing a story with a friend.

Okay, you’ve picked your story and you’re ready to tell it. So now what do you do?

Practice until it’s perfect! Right? Nope!

Yes, of course, you should practice. I never tell stories unless I have practiced and feel well prepared. But the key is not to have a perfectly memorized story. No way! Every time I tell a story, it’s different. The story is never memorized because I know my story, and it’s like a video playing in my mind. I know the key events, my main characters, what’s going to happen, and the sequence, especially the sequence. (Don’t want to tell the ending first!) Think of it as telling about a movie you just saw or a funny family story or a personal story about having a bad day. Every time you tell the story, will it be exactly the same? Of course not. Do you use the exact same words? Nope. Could there be a phrase or sentence you may want to memorize and repeat for an effective impact? Sure!

As far as memorizing, only memorize a part if it’s crucial to your story such as a phrase, a funny line, a repetitive part, or a humorous punch line at the end.

One helpful tip is to think of your story’s beginning, middle, and end. Play  this through your mind before you even practice. It helps you to not forget your story. Again, see the story in your mind’s eye. Picture it!

Okay…go practice!
