Kids: From Storytelling to “Published” Author!

We’ve all heard about writing prompts … so how about a storytelling prompt? How about finger puppets!

Storytelling and Puppets
Telling Stories With Finger Puppets

Kids can listen to stories you tell using puppets. Make up your own or tell some classic stories that are in the public domain. Follow up by discussing the stories or have the children draw pictures. Focus on main events, beginning, middle and end, sequence,  or narrative elements. Children can retell the stories using their own drawings or the puppets. Of course, kids can create their very own stories. Older children can tell stories and then write them. Add drawings and create picture books or create a collection of stories. Younger children can tell their stories and an adult or older child can write down the words for them. Stories should be short. Then “publish” their stories by making them into books by adding covers and drawings or simply just hanging them on the fridge! And another wonderful follow up … head to the library to check out some books on folk tales and/or find books who have the same characters that were in the stories. What  great connections between storytelling and literacy. Yeah …. from storytelling to “published” author!
